How to Override Self Signed Certificate Warning in your Browser ?


While using your web hosting services, you may punctually face the error in your browser that denies you from reaching the desired URL. The browser you are using will return a warning while trying to access a given website. It may occur upon accessing cPanel or WHM on one of your services.

The error you would have would be : 

  • On Chrome : 'Your Connection is not Private - NET::ERR_CERT_AUTHORITY_INVALID' 
  • On Firefox : 'Warning: Potential Security Risk Ahead'

This error means that the website isn't using an authority issued SSL certificates which means the encryption is self signed by server. If there are no SSL installed on your service then the server will generate a SSL certificate for https to work. It occurs for example when a VPS is freshly installed with WHM. 

In these cases, you may proceed and override the error as follows: 

Chrome

In Chrome, click on Advanced as indicated in the screenshot below :

Then click on Proceed to 'website' (unsafe) as shown the screenshot below:

You'll be able to now browse your website / cpanel interface. 

Firefox

In Firefox, you may click on advanced as shown in the screenshot below

And then click on "Accept the risk and proceed"

It will then take you to the requested URL.
